What happens when your images disappear?
Three scenes tell the story of African American photographer Thomas Askew (1847-1914), an Atlanta resident whose images captured the dignity of African Americans during a time when only stereotypical imagery of Blacks circulated.
ANITA GONZALEZ
Anita Gonzalez believes the art of storytelling connects people to their cultures. This Georgetown University faculty member extends the reach of her scholarship through public engagement. Gonzalez directs, devises and writes theatrical works. Her credits include membership in Beth Morrison Producer’s Academy, American Opera Project’s Composer’s and the Voice program and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She has written librettos for Atlanta Opera, Boston Opera Collaborative, Chicago Dramatists, and Houston Grand Opera’s Songs of Houston series.
NATHAN FELIX
Nathan Felix is a Mexican-American composer known for his immersive operas and experimental films. Felix has premiered 16 operas, 4 symphonies and various chamber works in Spain, Japan, Australia, Bulgaria, Portugal, China, Sweden, Denmark, Mongolia and the United States and has been featured on the BBC, MTV, NPR, TPR & PBS. Felix often focuses on telling Latinx themed and minority stories that highlight border issues, underserved communities and his hispanic heritage. In 2023, Felix participated in The 96-Hour Opera Festival hosted by the Atlanta Opera in which along with librettist Anita Gonzalez won the ‘Audience Favorite’ award for Faces in the Flames. He also serves as the founding director for the Opera Austin Festival.
